Samuel Bell Maxey, Confederate Major General, Lawyer, and United States Senator
Samuel was the third of four children to Rice and Lucetta Pope(Bell)Maxey. He was born in Tompkinsville, Monroe County, Kentucky, on March 30, 1825.
General Maxey died on August 16, 1895, at Eureka Springs, Arkansas, where he had gone for treatment for gastrointestinal disease. He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Paris, Lamar County, Texas.
The Maxey home in Paris, a two-story frame residence completed in 1868, is a combination of Greek Revival and High Victorian Italianate styling; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. |
